The abbey is located near the village of Chimay in the province of Hainault in southern Belgium. The brewery uses a very distinctive yeast strain, which gives Chimay beers their characteristic, very distinctive flavour. Chimay is one of the ten Trappist breweries that brew beer and certainly the most famous of these.

A few years earlier, John Bird Fuller had inherited the brewery from his father, and he decided to join forces with another brewery entrepreneur, Henry Smith, and Smith’s brother-in-law, brewmaster John Turner. Thus, Fuller, Smith & Turner brewery company was born, but the brewery itself was named after Fuller alone. Fuller’s is renowned for many award-winning beers such as London Pride and Fuller’s ESB.
